AI access is now a political issue. The US government blocked foreign users from using Anthropic's best models. At the same time, two new open models arrived. You cannot turn these open models off.
Here is what happened:
Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 are restricted. A US export rule stopped all foreign nationals from using these models. This includes Anthropic employees living abroad. Anthropic had to disable these models for everyone to follow the rule. The government cited national security concerns. Why this matters: A closed model can disappear overnight due to new laws. Do not build your entire business on one closed system.
Moonshot AI released Kimi K2.7 Code. This is an open-weights coding model available on Hugging Face. It is large but very cheap. It costs about 4 dollars per million tokens. Fable 5 costs 50 dollars for the same amount. Why this matters: Use cheap open models for bulk work. However, check the origin of the model before you give it your private code.
Google released DiffusionGemma. This is a text-diffusion model. It runs 4x faster than standard models. It can run on a single consumer GPU. Why this matters: Open weights are permanent. Once you download a model to your own machine, no government can switch it off.
The pattern is clear. Frontier models are subject to geopolitics. Open models offer stability.
When you pick an AI model, look at two things:
- Where does it run?
- Who can switch it off?
Do not just look at benchmark scores.
