Software engineering changes. In the past, you worried about machine code. Later, you used high-level languages. Now, AI writes the code.
You are no longer a scribe. You are an architect.
AI writes clean code. It does not know what the user wants. Vague requirements lead to the wrong product. You must ensure the product meets the need. This is your job.
AI helps you in these ways:
- It ends syntax errors.
- It explains old code.
- It creates tests fast.
- It cleans technical debt.
There is a risk. You get zombie code. The system works but no one knows why. This creates hidden complexity.
Education must change. Stop focusing on syntax. Focus on these:
- Requirement engineering.
- Product verification.
- Hybrid workflows with AI agents.
Coding speed is not the goal. Precision and validation are the goal.
Are schools ready for this change? Do we evaluate architects or scribes?
