Stop explaining the same things every time you start a chat.
Claude reads your code. It does not know your reasons.
Project files give Claude the backstory.
Use this three part structure:
- The fact: What happened.
- The why: The reason for the decision.
- The action: How Claude should behave.
Include these items:
- Trade-offs.
- Deadlines.
- Library choices.
- Legal or security rules.
Skip these items. Claude reads them in the files:
- Code patterns.
- File structure.
- Git history.
- Daily changes.
Reference files act as a map. They point to tools outside the project:
- Bug trackers.
- Design assets.
- Dashboards.
Claude reads context in layers:
- Global rules.
- Project rules.
- Memory files.
- The code.
Write project files when you feel the need to repeat yourself. Stop. Write it down.
This turns a cold start into a warm handoff.
