Dialogue design changed with LLMs. Rebecca Evanhoe from Slang AI explains the shift.
Design is not dead. Prompt engineering is not design. You must map user paths.
Example: Restaurant bookings.
- Some users have a date.
- Some want any open slot.
- Some have complex group sizes.
You decide the order of questions. You choose the words. LLMs only execute the plan.
Use a hybrid system.
- Use LLMs for menus and hours.
- Use rules for API bookings.
- Rules stop errors in business logic.
Watch your costs. Big models cost too much. Use a group of small prompts.
Evaluation is the new core. You do not control every word.
- Read call transcripts.
- Use LLMs to grade logs.
- Use humans to set a gold standard.
- Track Task Completion Rate.
- Ignore CSAT scores.
Voice AI is harder than text.
- Background noise ruins the text.
- Lag kills the flow.
- Keep delay under one second.
AI finds new money. It tells owners when to open based on missed calls. This data is better than surveys.
Designers are still needed. Companies skipping design will fail. They will hire you in 18 months.
