Retail inflation in India reached 3.93% in May 2026. The Consumer Price Index rose from 3.48% in April. The government released this data on Friday.
Food inflation also grew. The Consumer Food Price Index reached 4.78% in May. It stood at 4.20% in April.
Inflation differed across regions:
- Rural CPI inflation: 4.25%
- Urban CPI inflation: 3.53%
- Rural food inflation: 4.85%
- Urban food inflation: 4.66%
Housing inflation reached 2.12% overall. Rural housing inflation was 2.73%. Urban housing inflation was 1.91%.
Prices increased sharply for several items:
- Silver jewellery: 155.23% (up from 144.36% in April)
- Tomato: 48.43% (up from 35.26%)
- Gold, diamond and platinum jewellery: 40.93%
- Ginger: 32.49% (up from 14.36%)
- Raisins and monacca: 21.97%
Potato prices stayed much lower than a year ago at -23.71%. Other items with falling prices included:
- Peas: -11.47%
- Motor cars and jeeps: -7.19%
- Cumin: -4.59%
- Motorcycles and scooters: -3.56%
The National Statistical Office collected price data from 1,407 urban markets, including online markets, and 1,465 villages across states and Union Territories. The response rate was 100% in both rural and urban areas.
The government will release the next CPI inflation data for June 2026 on July 13.
