The Union Cabinet approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the meeting.
The new corridor will stretch 6.032 km from Koteshwar Road to Ahmedabad Airport. The total cost is Rs 2,169.04 crore. This amount includes interest during construction.
The corridor will include five stations:
- Ashram Road
- Koteshwar Prachin Mandir
- Sabarmati River
- Sardar Nagar
- Airport
Four stations will be elevated. One station will be underground.
After completion, the metro network in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar will grow to 77.63 km.
The corridor will improve links between the airport and other parts of the city. It will connect with the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro network. It will also serve residential and commercial areas with limited access to rapid public transport.
The government said the corridor will support transport needs for future sports events. These include the World Police Games 2029 and the Commonwealth Games 2030.
The metro extension will give commuters another option to reach the airport. It will reduce pressure on roads and improve travel times. It will improve access to the airport, railway stations, and bus depots. It will also support business activity near metro stations.
Officials said the expanded network will help lower transport emissions. More people will shift from road travel to public transport.
The project will create about 2,000 jobs during peak construction. About 500 people will work in operations and maintenance after the line opens.
