Microsoft is changing its Azure developer certification path.

The AZ-204 exam will retire on July 31, 2026. Microsoft is replacing it with the AI-200 exam. This change moves the focus toward AI cloud development.

The new AI-200 exam leads to the Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate certification. This role requires you to build and manage AI solutions on Azure.

Why this change matters:

Traditional cloud development is changing. Modern developers must now integrate AI, automation, and data services into their work. This is not a name change. It is a role update.

Key differences between AZ-204 and AI-200:

  • AZ-204 focused on general Azure applications like web apps, storage, and APIs.
  • AI-200 focuses on AI-enabled cloud solutions.
  • AI-200 requires knowledge of Python, vector databases, and Azure SDKs.

The AI-200 exam covers these areas:

  • Developing containerized solutions (20-25%)
  • Developing AI solutions with Azure data services (25-30%)
  • Connecting to Azure services (20-25%)
  • Securing, monitoring, and troubleshooting (20-25%)

What you should do:

If you are almost ready for AZ-204, take it before July 31, 2026.

If you are just starting your studies, focus on AI-200. It aligns with the future of the industry.

Study these topics for AI-200:

  • Containerized applications on Azure.
  • Data services for AI and vector databases.
  • Messaging and event-driven architecture.
  • Security, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Python and SDK-based development.

Microsoft is signaling that the future of Azure development is AI-first. You must build intelligent and data-connected solutions to stay relevant.
