Blockchain networks rely on incentives.

Nodes and users must act in ways that support the network. Game theory provides the math to make this happen. It helps design systems where honest behavior remains the most profitable choice.

This survey looks at how game theory works in different blockchain areas:

  • Consensus mechanisms: How nodes agree on the state of the ledger.
  • Security: How to prevent attacks like 51 percent attacks.
  • Tokenomics: How supply and demand affect network stability.
  • Layer 2 solutions: How sidechains maintain security through math.

If you design a system without game theory, attackers will find ways to break it. You need to align individual greed with the health of the network.
