Anthropic filed its S-1 last week. This move makes it the first pure AI company on a major US exchange. This happened the same day Alphabet announced an $80 billion capital raise. The AI race is no longer just about technology. It is now a race for capital.
If you build products using AI APIs, this matters to you. When your vendor goes public, your world changes. You must watch pricing, stability, and long-term support.
Here is what the filing tells us:
• Valuation: Anthropic seeks a $60 billion valuation. OpenAI is much larger at $157 billion, but Anthropic is growing faster. • Users: They have over 10 million weekly active Claude users. • Customers: Over 1,000 enterprise customers pay for Claude for Work. • Revenue: Most of this income started appearing only 18 months ago.
The filing shows high customer concentration. A few large companies provide most of the revenue. This makes Anthropic work harder to keep its API stable. If they lose a few big clients, it shows up in their public reports.
What this means for your code:
- More Transparency: As a public company, Anthropic must disclose risks. They have to report major changes to API pricing or service levels to the SEC. This gives you more stability.
- Predictable Versions: Enterprises hate unexpected changes. Expect Anthropic to stick to dated model snapshots to ensure compliance.
- The MCP Moat: Anthropic is pushing the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This is a way for Claude to connect to tools and databases. If MCP becomes the standard, your tools will work with Claude automatically.
- Pricing Changes: Public companies hate volatile pricing. Expect clearer tiers and more predictable enterprise plans.
If you work at a company spending large amounts on API calls, act now. Lock in multi-year contracts before the IPO. Once they are public, procurement gets rigid and discounts get harder to find.
Watch these three things after the IPO:
- Enterprise customer growth.
- Revenue per customer.
- MCP adoption rates.
AI APIs are moving from experimental tools to essential utilities. Utilities answer to Wall Street.
What is your plan? Will you lock in pricing now or wait?
