At 5:21 PM Eastern Time, the most capable AI models on earth went dark.
In India, it was 2:51 AM. I was mid-build. I was deep in the night, working on something real. Then the connection dropped. The model I pay for stopped answering.
I thought my wifi failed. I checked my code. I restarted my router.
It was not my fault. It was a government directive.
On June 12, 2026, the US government issued an export-control order to Anthropic. They suspended access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 for all foreign nationals. This included the company's own engineers based outside the US.
Under US law, an API call to a foreign person is treated as a physical shipment of technology. Since Anthropic could not verify the citizenship of every user in real time, they had one choice. They switched it off for everyone.
This is a massive lesson in risk management.
The models launched on June 9. They were gone by June 12. That is a three-day lifespan.
We often mistake convenience for capability. We rent intelligence through APIs and SaaS tools. We assume that because we pay the bill, we own the access. We are wrong.
An SLA or a contract does not protect you from a government order. A company's values do not matter when a legal signature arrives.
If a model lives on someone else's server, you do not own it. You are renting cognition. That access is only as stable as a government's mood.
This is why I am changing my approach.
I used to treat open-weight models as secondary tools. I used them for small tasks while I used hosted models for my main work. That ends now.
Open-weight models from labs like DeepSeek and Qwen are not compromises. They are elite. More importantly, you can download the weights. You can run them on your own hardware.
A letter from a government cannot switch off a file on your local disk.
Moving to open-weight models is not an ideology. It is survival. It is the same discipline that tells you to keep offline backups.
Ask yourself these questions:
- What in your tech stack do you actually own?
- What is one letter away from going dark?
- Which dependencies control you?
Map your risks before the next switch is flipped.
