Anthropic today released a unified memory system for Claude that links its chat interface with the Cowork agent, letting the assistant keep track of details across both environments without users having to re-brief. The upgrade ends a workflow friction that forced professionals to repeat project facts when moving from brainstorming to execution, and it adds fine-grained controls over what the AI remembers.
Why the split mattered
Until now, Claude kept two separate memory stores. In the chat window users could discuss strategy, list speaker names, or outline headcount targets, but those facts vanished the moment they switched to the Cowork workspace that drafts emails or generates reports. The result was a “context silo”: hours of research disappeared, and every new session began with a manual re-entry of key information. For developers, founders, and consultants who rely on rapid iteration, that extra step cost time and added cognitive load.
How the new memory works
Anthropic merged the two stores into a single, dynamically updated bank. As a conversation unfolds, the system tags topics and adds them to memory in near real-time, instead of waiting for the session to end and then summarising it. If a user mentions a city, a budget figure, or a list of speakers while brainstorming, the same data becomes instantly available to Cowork when the user asks the assistant to compose an agenda or send a briefing note.
The architecture also lets users see exactly what Claude has stored. A built-in viewer lists each memory item, and users can edit or delete entries with a click. This visibility helps developers verify that the assistant acts on up-to-date business intelligence and helps founders guard against stale or incorrect information influencing decisions.
Privacy safeguards
Persistent memory raises obvious privacy questions, so Anthropic built a tiered guardrail system. By default the AI ignores personal or sensitive data points such as health information, race, religion, politics, and gender identity. When a conversation touches one of those categories, the system simply skips adding it to memory.
For workflows that genuinely need that context—say, a health-tech startup tracking patient-related metrics—users can flip an “include sensitive topics in memory” toggle. The app then notifies the user each time a sensitive topic is about to be saved. Even with the toggle on, the system refuses to store highly regulated identifiers like Social Security numbers, government IDs, criminal records, or immigration status, in line with its acceptable-use policy.
Rollout and access
The unified memory feature is live across Anthropic’s Free, Pro, and Max subscription tiers. Web and desktop clients received the update immediately; mobile users on iOS and Android will gain the capability once they install the latest app version.
