DeepSeek just raised over 50 billion yuan. This puts their valuation above 50 billion dollars. It makes them the most valuable AI company in China.

The deal structure is unique. Founder Liang Wenfeng keeps total control. Outside investors put money into a partnership managed by Liang. These investors have no voting rights. They also face a five year lock up period.

The Chinese state-backed National AI Fund is the exception. They invested directly and have full voting rights.

Key players in this round include:

DeepSeek changed the AI industry in early 2024. They trained a model competitive with GPT-4 for only 5.6 million dollars. This proved you do not need billion dollar budgets to build great AI.

While US firms like OpenAI and Anthropic raise much larger sums, DeepSeek has a different strategy. US chip bans prevent them from buying high-end hardware. This forces them to be efficient. Forced efficiency is now their competitive advantage.

The company focuses on open source models. This helps them grow an ecosystem rather than just chasing direct revenue.

This funding comes during a massive price war in China. Tencent Cloud recently cut DeepSeek-V4 API prices by over 97 percent. In China, companies must sell their products cheaper as they grow more valuable.
