Your website must work for everyone. WCAG 2.1 is the global standard for web accessibility. It helps people with sight, hearing, or movement disabilities.
There are three levels:
- Level A: Basic needs.
- Level AA: The legal standard.
- Level AAA: The highest level.
POUR rules guide the standard:
- Perceivable: Users see or hear the content.
- Operable: Users use a keyboard or other tools.
- Understandable: The site is clear and logical.
- Robust: The code works with screen readers.
Law is changing:
- Public sector: Must use Level AA now.
- Private business: European law requires accessibility by June 2025.
- It includes online stores, banks, and transport services.
Most sites fail:
- 96% of top websites have errors.
- Only 4% meet the minimum standard.
Common errors:
- Low text contrast.
- Missing image descriptions.
- Bad buttons.
Do these simple things:
- Add alt text to images.
- Use clear labels for forms.
- Add subtitles to videos.
- Make keyboard focus visible.
