SpaceX wants to move AI computing into space.

The company plans to build a constellation of satellites for AI inference. This network could eventually reach one million satellites. SpaceX aims to move AI infrastructure from Earth into low orbit.

This move offers four main advantages:

• Constant Solar Energy: Satellites receive unfiltered sunlight. This produces 40% more energy than solar panels on Earth.

• No Land Constraints: Building on Earth requires land, permits, and utility approvals. Space requires none of these.

• Lower Latency: A satellite at 550 km altitude has a 3 to 5 millisecond round-trip latency. This beats cross-continental fiber cables.

• Fast Scaling: Terrestrial data centers take years to build. SpaceX can scale by increasing its launch frequency with Starship.

This plan changes how AI agents work. Currently, agents run on centralized cloud GPUs. Orbital compute allows for distributed architectures. This means model instances live physically closer to users.

More competition in the compute market will likely lower inference prices. This helps developers build more agent-based products without high costs.

Technical hurdles remain. SpaceX must solve thermal management in a vacuum and protect hardware from radiation. They also must manage orbital debris.

SpaceX is no longer just a communications company. They are becoming an AI infrastructure giant. The race for AI compute is moving beyond Earth.
