Zhipu AI just hit a major milestone.
Their GLM 5.2 model now holds the top spot on the Design Arena HTML leaderboard. It earned an Elo score of 1,360. This puts it slightly ahead of Anthropic's Claude Fable 5, which scored 1,350.
This shift happens during a unique time for the AI industry. The US Commerce Department recently suspended access to Claude Fable 5 for all non-US users due to export controls. This leaves a gap in the market for other models.
Why this matters for developers:
• Open Weights: GLM 5.2 is an open-weight model. You can run it locally using frameworks like vLLM or SGLang. There are no regional restrictions. • Massive Scale: The model uses 753 billion parameters. • Lower Costs: Pricing for GLM 5.2 is significantly lower than US rivals.
Look at the cost difference for output tokens per million:
- GLM 5.2: $4.40
- Claude Opus 4.8: $25.00
- GPT-5.5: $30.00
For a team running 20 million output tokens a month, the savings are huge. You would pay $88 for GLM 5.2 versus $500 for Opus 4.8.
While GLM 5.2 wins in HTML and UI design, Claude models still lead in complex software engineering tasks. However, Zhipu has proven that an open-weight model can match top-tier performance in applied design at a fraction of the price.
Watch the leaderboard closely. A small change in user votes can flip these rankings again.
