Brent Crude Falls Below $80 as US-Iran Peace Deal Looms

Global oil markets experienced a significant downturn on Tuesday as optimism surged regarding a potential peace agreement between the United States and Iran. The prospect of renewed stability in the Middle East has led to a sharp decline in crude prices, marking a three-month low for major benchmarks.

Supply Concerns Ease as Strait of Hormuz Reopening Nears

The primary driver behind the price slump is the expected reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime chokepoint for global energy supplies. Following retaliatory measures by Iran against US and Israeli strikes in late February, tanker traffic through the waterway had been effectively halted, causing crude prices to skyrocket due to supply fears.

With a peace agreement expected to be signed this Friday in Switzerland, US President Donald Trump has stated that the Strait of Hormuz will "completely open." This development has shifted market sentiment from panic over supply disruptions to anticipation of a much-needed easing in global oil liquidity.

Crude Benchmarks Take a Sharp Hit

The impact on energy benchmarks was immediate and substantial. Brent North Sea crude, the international benchmark used by many global markets, plummeted by 4.0 percent to settle at $79.87 per barrel. This represents the first time the benchmark has dipped below the critical $80 threshold since early March.

Similarly, the West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the main US oil contract, saw a significant sell-off. WTI slid 4.5 percent, falling to $77.16 per barrel. The synchronized drop across both major benchmarks reflects a global consensus that the heightened geopolitical risk premium is rapidly evaporating.

Market Sentiment: From Volatility to Stability

Market analysts suggest that traders are moving quickly to price in the geopolitical shift. David Morrison, a senior market analyst at broker Trade Nation, noted that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is viewed as the most immediate and positive outcome of the impending peace deal.
