India sent its first shipment of Geographical Indication-tagged Tezpur litchi from Assam to Dubai and Singapore. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority handled the export.

The one-tonne shipment left on June 7. The fruit has sweetness, bright red color, strong smell, and good eating quality.

Tezpur grows several litchi varieties:

Farmers linked to the export supply chain received prices nearly 10 percent above domestic market rates. The shipment created new marketing chances for growers.

Officials attended the send-off event:

The export came during the Tezpur Litchi Festival 2026. The festival marked 100 years of litchi farming in the region. About one tonne of litchis went to Dubai. Another 600 kilograms went to Singapore.

Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal posted on X about the export. He said it would help farmers secure better prices.

Litchi farming in Tezpur started in 1923. Padmanath Gohain Baruah established the first orchards. Today more than 150 farmers grow litchis on over 400 bighas of land.

APEDA expects the shipment to lead to larger export volumes in the future.
