ChatGPT lost its majority control of the AI market.
New data from Sensor Tower shows ChatGPT market share hit 46.4% in May 2026. It held over 50% in January.
The market is changing fast.
Top competitors are growing:
- Google Gemini holds 27.7% market share.
- Anthropic Claude holds 10.3% market share.
The top three AI assistants now control 89% of all time spent on AI apps.
Why is this happening?
Gemini grows because it lives inside Gmail, Docs, and Android. Users stay in the Google ecosystem.
Claude wins on productivity. 13% of Claude users pay for premium plans. This is the highest conversion rate in the industry.
ChatGPT still has 1.1 billion monthly users. It is still the leader. But its monopoly is ending.
Two main factors caused this shift:
- Privacy concerns. A partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense caused a spike in uninstalls.
- New ads. OpenAI started showing ads to 17% of daily users.
The AI market is growing, not shrinking. Users will spend 2.2 billion dollars on AI apps in the first half of 2026. This is double the spending from last year.
The competition is getting harder. Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Meta AI are all fighting for space.
The winners will not just build better models. They will win by fitting into your daily work and earning your trust.
