Analyse AI SEO With Free Tools
Traditional rank tracking is not enough anymore. It tells you your position in Google. It does not tell you if AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews are using your content.
This is a massive blind spot for marketers. AI summaries can reduce clicks to your website even if you rank high. You need to know if you are being cited or if you are being ignored.
You can track this using tools you already own. Here is how to use Google Search Console (GSC), GA4, and ChatGPT together.
- Use Google Search Console for Query Analysis
Rankings are about lists. Citations are about trust. To find the gap, follow these steps:
- Export your Queries report from GSC as a CSV.
- Open the file in a text editor.
- Paste the data into ChatGPT.
- Use a prompt to find question-based queries. These are the searches most likely to trigger an AI Overview.
If you have access to the Generative AI features report in GSC, use it. It shows which URLs actually appear in AI Overviews. Combine this with your standard query data to see which topics are losing clicks to AI answers.
- Use GA4 to Track AI Referral Traffic
GSC shows Google AI. GA4 shows other AI tools.
- Go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic Acquisition in GA4.
- Look for sources like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, or gemini.google.com.
- Export this data and ask ChatGPT to compare the engagement rates of these AI visitors against your standard organic traffic.
If an AI tool sends traffic, your content is working well outside of Google.
- Optimize for Citations, Not Just Rankings
If you see high impressions but very low click-through rates, an AI Overview is likely stealing your clicks. Do not just rewrite the page. Make it easier for AI to read:
- Use descriptive H2 and H3 headings.
- Answer the main question at the start of each section.
- Use short paragraphs.
- Add tables, lists, and clear data.
- Use FAQ schema to structure your answers.
The goal is to make your content the most useful source for the AI to cite.
