Closed labs face more pressure. Open models provide more choice. Here are three stories for builders.
- OpenAI faces legal scrutiny
Forty-two state attorneys general sent a subpoena to OpenAI. They want data on advertising, user retention, and health data. They also want to see how ChatGPT handles minors and seniors. They are looking at how the model agrees with users too often.
If you build apps using ChatGPT, expect stricter rules. Regulators will watch how your app treats users.
- Anthropic model changes
Anthropic is retiring Claude Sonnet 4 and Opus 4. If your app uses these old model IDs, your calls will fail. Update your code to current models now.
Anthropic also moved Claude Code and the Agent SDK to a paid credit pool. Check your configuration and your billing.
- Open models are rising
Six new open-weight models arrived in two weeks. These include Qwen 3.7, DeepSeek V4.1, Hunyuan Large 3, ERNIE 5.1, Doubao Pro, and GLM-6. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash is already trending on Hugging Face.
Closed labs make access harder. Open models make it easier to self-host. Stop renewing closed plans on autopilot. Test an open model on your workload today.
