AI tools do not flatten the skill gap. They widen it.
A new study from Anthropic shows senior engineers have a 31% higher success rate than juniors when using Claude Code. This study looked at over 1,000 coding sessions.
Many people believe AI will make junior developers as good as seniors. This data says otherwise. Senior engineers performed better even when tasks were difficult.
Three main reasons explain this gap:
- Task decomposition: Seniors break big problems into small steps the AI can follow.
- Prompt quality: Seniors write better instructions for the AI.
- Error recovery: Seniors spot mistakes faster and fix the AI's path.
The AI acts as a tool. It does not replace human judgment. Your ability to direct the agent determines your success.
This finding changes how companies use AI. You cannot simply replace junior staff with AI. Instead, AI makes experienced engineers even more valuable.
The industry might need to stop talking about replacing juniors. Instead, focus on how AI helps seniors work faster.
