India is in talks with the United States about a Section 301 investigation. The Office of the United States Trade Representative named India among countries with unfair trade practices linked to forced labour and excess industrial capacity.
The USTR carried out 60 investigations under Section 301. It said 54 economies do not have strong rules to stop goods made with forced labour. India is on this list.
On June 2, the USTR proposed extra tariffs on imports from 60 economies.
- Imports from Canada, Ecuador, the European Union, Indonesia, Mexico, and Pakistan would face a 10% tariff.
- Imports from India, China, and 52 other economies would face a 12.5% tariff.
Pakistan and Indonesia are key trade competitors for India.
The proposed tariffs are not final. They remain open for review.
India and the US continue talks on a trade deal. The commerce ministry said India continues to work with the US on the Section 301 issue.
India is also working with the US to put in place a framework agreement. This follows an announcement from February 2, 2026, and a joint statement from February 7, 2026.
