US President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States and India are nearing the finalization of a significant bilateral trade agreement. This development marks a pivotal moment in strengthening economic ties between the two democratic partners as they move to resolve final technicalities.

High-Level Negotiations Heat Up

The momentum for a trade pact has accelerated following President Trump's remarks at the G7 Summit, where he stated, "We are very close to the deal." This comes as both nations intensify efforts to bridge remaining gaps in their economic framework.

To provide the final shape to this agreement, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is scheduled to visit India on June 23-24. During this visit, Greer will hold high-stakes talks with India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal noted that these discussions will focus on adding the "final touches" to the existing framework deal and addressing the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

Resolving the Final Technicalities

While the groundwork has been laid, negotiators are currently fine-tuning the specific language of the pact. Minister Piyush Goyal previously expressed significant optimism, noting that "mostly everything is finalised." He even cited US Ambassador Sergio Gor, who suggested that 99 per cent of the terms have already been settled, leaving only minor issues regarding "commas and full stops."

The timing of this deal is critical. Both nations are racing to conclude an interim agreement before July 24, the date when the US administration's temporary 10% tariff regime is set to expire. Recent shifts in the US tariff regime, following a Supreme Court ruling against reciprocal tariffs, have necessitated a revisit of parts of the initial framework established in February.
