Trump Signals Progress on Landmark India-US Trade Agreement

US President Donald Trump has signaled that the United States and India are on the verge of finalizing a significant bilateral trade agreement. Speaking on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, Trump noted that both nations are "very close to the deal," marking a potential turning point in the economic relationship between the two major democracies.

High-Level Talks Set for June

The momentum follows a series of intensive negotiations aimed at resolving the final hurdles of the pact. A critical milestone is scheduled for June 23-24, when US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is set to visit India. During this visit, Greer will engage in high-level discussions with India's Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal.

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal confirmed that these discussions will focus on adding "final touches" to the existing framework deal and addressing the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). This visit follows earlier rounds of negotiations held in New Delhi led by US chief negotiator Brendan Lynch, indicating a structured and rapid approach to closing the deal.

While the groundwork for the agreement is substantial, negotiators are now focusing on granular details. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently remarked that nearly all elements of the pact are finalized, even citing US Ambassador Sergio Gor’s assessment that "99 per cent" of the issues have been settled. Goyal described the remaining work as debating "small issues, commas and full stops."
