𝗔𝗜 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗚𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴
AI detectors often flag human writing as machine-made. Many companies use these tools for hiring or grading. They treat the score as a fact. It is not a fact.
These tools do not read your text for meaning. They use math to guess the probability of machine output.
They look at three main things:
- Perplexity: This measures how predictable your words are. AI chooses the most likely next word. Human writing is often unexpected. Low perplexity looks like AI.
- Burstiness: This measures sentence variety. Humans mix short and long sentences. AI often uses a steady rhythm. Low variety looks like AI.
- Classifiers: These models study human and machine samples. They guess based on patterns. If the model sees a new writing style, it fails.
Watermarking is another method. It hides patterns in word choices. This method fails if someone edits or paraphrases the text.
These tools have serious flaws:
- Good writing looks like AI. Clear, simple, and structured prose has low perplexity. The better you write, the more robotic you look to a tool.
- Bias against non-native speakers. A Stanford study found that detectors flag non-native English speakers more often. Simple phrasing looks like machine output to these tools.
- Easy to trick. A few synonyms or light edits break the detector. This punishes honest writers while letting low-effort AI users pass.
Even OpenAI stopped using its own detector in 2023 because it was not accurate. If the creators cannot detect their own AI, do not trust a third-party tool claiming high accuracy.
How to use these scores safely:
- Do not act on a single score. A false accusation causes real harm to students or job seekers.
- Check the process. Look at edit history and drafts instead of a probability score.
- Show uncertainty. If you use these tools, show a range of confidence instead of a binary human or AI label.
AI detectors are pattern matchers. They are useful for hints but dangerous as proof.
