The Union Cabinet approved a Rs 5,041 crore scheme to reduce vehicle pollution in Delhi-NCR. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision on Wednesday.

The scheme targets more than 1.9 lakh trucks and 16,000 buses. These vehicles are BS-IV and older models. Owners will switch to BS-VI or electric vehicles.

Government data shows BS-I to BS-IV vehicles emit 67% more carbon monoxide and 97% more particulate matter than BS-VI vehicles.

Owners will receive:

Owners must scrap old vehicles at registered scrapping facilities or sell them in non-NCAP cities. They must then purchase and register a new or used BS-VI or electric vehicle in Delhi-NCR.

State governments will provide tax concessions:

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the National Capital Region Planning Board, and the governments of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan will implement the scheme.

Officials expect the replacement of older diesel fleets to lower emissions from the commercial transport sector.
