I thought my agent memory worked for six months.

It remembered details across sessions. It pulled context for projects. It corrected mistakes. Every sign pointed to success.

I was wrong.

Claude Code has its own built-in memory. That system was doing the work. My system was running and writing to its own store. It looked busy. It was an understudy on a stage where a different actor spoke the lines.

A system that fails loudly is easy to fix. You see the error and you act.

A system that fails quietly is dangerous. It produces helpful answers. It looks like success. You cannot tell if your system works by looking at the output. The output is the same.

You need a forcing function to find the truth. You must turn the other system off.

This test works for any agent memory setup. It takes one minute.

Follow these steps:

• Turn off the native memory of your runtime. • In Claude Code, use this command: CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_AUTO_MEMORY=1 • Use your agent as usual. • Ask it to remember a specific fact. • Start a new session and ask for that fact.

Watch what your system does alone.

If the memory works, your system is solid.

If the memory goes blank, the native store was carrying you. Every demo you gave was a shadow, not your system.

When I ran this test, my system went quiet. Six months of success was actually six months of something else covering my mistakes.

If you add memory to a runtime that already has memory, you face this risk. As models get smarter, they hide these gaps better. A polished demo does not prove your system works. It might just prove the model is good enough to hide your failure.

Do not trust good answers. Run the off-test. Turn the other thing off and find out who is really talking.

It took me six months to learn this. It will take you one minute.
