India-US Trade Deal: Modi and Trump Push for Meaningful Pact

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have accelerated the momentum for a bilateral trade agreement following high-level discussions at the G7 Summit in France. The two leaders have directed their respective officials to expedite negotiations to secure a deal that is both balanced and commercially significant for both nations.

A Push for a Balanced and Commercial Trade Agreement

During their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, PM Modi and President Trump reviewed the progress of negotiations regarding an interim Bilateral Trade Agreement. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that both leaders expressed satisfaction with the existing progress and have issued a mandate to finalize a "balanced, mutually beneficial, and commercially meaningful" agreement at the earliest opportunity.

To move these discussions from high-level diplomacy to technical execution, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is scheduled to visit India next week. This visit is expected to be a critical step in resolving specific trade barriers and defining the framework of the proposed interim pact.

Strengthening Ties via the India-US COMPACT

A significant portion of the bilateral dialogue focused on the India-US COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology). This initiative, which was launched following a previous meeting in Washington D.C. in February 2025, serves as the backbone for deeper integration between the two economies and security apparatuses.

The leaders reviewed substantial advancements made under the COMPACT framework, specifically highlighting breakthroughs in:

  • Defence and Strategic Technologies: Enhancing military interoperability and tech sharing.
  • Energy Sector: Expanding cooperation in sustainable and reliable energy sources.
  • Bilateral Trade: Streamlining commerce to drive transformative economic change.

By leveraging the COMPACT initiative, both nations aim to evolve their "Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership" into a more robust economic and technological alliance.
