Ukrainian forces used a drone to strike a service vehicle near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, killing chief engineer Alexander Yakovlev and his driver. The attack has reignited fears that a conflict-driven mishap could trigger a wider nuclear emergency.
How the strike unfolded
Rosatom head Alexei Likhachev said the drone hit a vehicle shuttling between the plant and the nearby town of Enerhodar. The vehicle was not part of the reactor complex, but it carried the plant’s chief engineer—a key figure in daily operations—and his driver. Both men died on the spot.
Zaporizhzhia hosts six reactors and is the biggest nuclear power station in Europe. Russian troops seized the plant in the early weeks of the 2022 invasion, turning it into a frontline asset.
