SoftBank is turning an old Sharp LCD factory in Osaka into an AI data center. They are adding a battery plant too.
Many people worry about chip shortages. H100s and Blackwells are parts. These shortages end.
The real limits are harder to solve:
- Power grid connections.
- Water rights.
- Local permits.
- Political will.
The cheapest AI capacity in 2026 is what already exists.
SoftBank gets a head start by reusing a site. They get:
- A ready power substation.
- Industrial zoning.
- A trained workforce.
- Neighbors who accept the factory.
New builds often fail. Residents hate noise. They hate power drains. Old industrial sites avoid these fights. The political deal is already made.
AI growth is not a build problem. It is a search problem. Capital is available. Chips are available.
Land and power are the limits. Building a substation takes time. You fail to build a community. You find one. Then you build inside it.
