US tech stocks dropped sharply on Friday. Semiconductor companies led the decline. Investors grew cautious about artificial intelligence valuations. Strong US jobs data also rattled markets.
The PHLX Semiconductor Index fell 10.3%. This marked its worst single-day drop since March 2020. The slide followed Broadcom's quarterly earnings. The results failed to meet market expectations for its custom AI chip business.
Over two days, the semiconductor benchmark lost roughly 12%. US-listed chipmakers shed around $1.3 trillion in market value.
Key stock moves include:
- Nvidia fell about 6%. The drop erased more than $300 billion in market value.
- Micron Technology plunged 13%.
- Marvell Technology sank 17%.
- Advanced Micro Devices dropped nearly 11%.
- Broadcom lost 7.9% on Friday. Its two-day decline reached almost 20%.
The sell-off came days after the semiconductor index hit a record high. The index remains up 73% this year.
Broader markets also declined. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.4%. The S&P 500 dropped 0.7%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 81 points, or 0.2%.
The Labor Department reported employers added 172,000 jobs in May. Economists had expected roughly half this number. The strong hiring raised concerns about the Federal Reserve having less room to lower interest rates this year. Bond yields climbed higher. This put additional pressure on stocks.
Geopolitical tensions added to market stress. The Iran war continues to affect the global economy. US crude oil traded near $93 per barrel. Brent crude hovered near $95 per barrel. Both prices sit well above the $70 per barrel level seen before the conflict began in late February.
The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed. This route carries much of the world's oil and natural gas shipments. The closure has raised concerns about inflation and slower growth.
US and Iranian negotiators reached a tentative ceasefire agreement last week. Negotiators have not finalized the agreement. Developments in Lebanon have also clouded hopes for a lasting settlement.
