𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝟱 𝗦𝗵𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄

Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 on June 9, 2026. Three days later, the US government issued an export control directive. Anthropic had to suspend access immediately.

If you use Claude Fable 5 or Claude Mythos 5, your API calls will fail. This is not a local error. The models are disabled at the infrastructure level.

Why did this happen?

A researcher claimed to find a way to bypass safety filters using multiple AI agents. This method allegedly helped create cyberattack tools. Amazon escalated these findings to the US Treasury. This led to the government order to stop access for all foreign nationals.

Anthropic cannot verify user nationality in real time. To follow the law, they had to shut down both models for everyone.

What you should do now:

You can use this command to find references in your code: grep -rn "claude-fable-5|claude-mythos-5" .

Other models like Claude Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 4.5 are working normally. They are not affected by this shutdown.

Do not try to use different API keys or regions. There is no workaround.

Wait for Anthropic to work with the government to restore access. Treat the return of Fable 5 as a future upgrade.
