Norway is taking a hard stand against generative AI in schools.
Starting in August 2026, the country will ban AI tools for students aged 6 to 13. This includes chatbots and image generators. The government wants children to focus on reading, writing, and math without digital shortcuts.
The policy uses three age groups to manage technology:
• Ages 6–13: A total ban on generative AI during school hours. • Ages 14–16: Supervised use allowed only with teacher guidance. • Ages 17–19: Students learn to use AI tools independently for future jobs.
This decision follows a successful ban on smartphones in Norwegian classrooms. That move helped reduce bullying and improved student grades. Norway is also planning to ban social media for children under 16.
The goal is to protect core academic skills. Officials worry that AI lets children skip the hard work needed to learn.
Critics point out one flaw. The ban only applies during school hours. Students can still use these tools at home. This might create a gap between students who have AI access and those who do not.
Norway is one of the first nations to set such clear boundaries. Other countries are watching to see if this move helps or hurts education.
