Norway will ban generative AI for students in grades 1 to 7. This rule starts in late August 2026.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere announced the decision. He says children must learn to read, write, and do math first. He notes that learning outcomes have dropped since 2015. He blames smartphones, screens, and algorithms for this decline.

Here are the key details:

• The ban affects students aged 6 to 13. • Secondary school students (ages 14 to 16) use AI only under teacher supervision. • Older students will learn proper AI use. • Norway plans a law to bring physical books back to classrooms.

Norway is not the only country taking these steps. Japan issued caution guidelines for children under 13 in 2023. In the United States, courts allow schools to penalize students for unauthorized AI use. UC Berkeley Law School will ban AI for most graded work in 2026.

Other nations take a different path. The United Arab Emirates will make AI a required subject for all grades starting in 2025. Germany says a ban is unrealistic and wants to integrate AI into classrooms.

Norway is also planning a social media ban for children under 16. The government wants to give teachers more control over the classroom environment.
