People say AI agents will replace SaaS and websites. I disagree.

As a software builder, I see things differently. AI agents are not replacing software. They are adding a new layer on top of it.

Businesses rely on databases, APIs, and workflows. These systems will not vanish. AI simply provides a new way to interact with them.

Think about these examples:

  • Calculators did not replace math.
  • Google did not replace websites.
  • Smartphones did not replace computers.

They changed how we access tools. AI agents do the same.

AI performs best when it handles repetitive tasks.

Use AI for:

  • Gathering information from multiple tabs.
  • Searching through PDFs and databases.
  • Generating reports.
  • Updating records.
  • Summarizing meetings.

AI agents are not perfect. I have seen them fail by:

  • Misunderstanding instructions.
  • Using incomplete data.
  • Giving overconfident answers.
  • Losing context.

This is why human oversight matters. The best systems are collaborative. Humans stay in control while AI speeds up the work.

This trend makes strong software engineering more valuable. AI adds complexity. It requires better backend systems, security, and infrastructure.

We will not live in a world of only chatbots. We will see hybrid experiences. You will still use dashboards and buttons. You will also have the option to ask an AI to do the work for you.

If you are a developer, focus on fundamentals first:

  • Databases
  • APIs
  • Cloud deployment
  • Product architecture

Then, learn AI tools like RAG and vector databases. The best engineers will combine traditional skills with AI capabilities.

I do not want to replace people. I want to amplify them. The best products help humans work faster and make better decisions.

The real opportunity is building systems where software and humans work together.

Do you think AI agents will replace apps or just add a new layer?
