They trained an AI model on 45,000 coral observations dating back to 1960 and fed it 42 environmental variables—water chemistry, temperature shifts, and more. The algorithm uncovered three kinds of “climate refugia.”

The preprint on EcoEvoRxiv shows resilience clusters in just five nations: Australia, the Bahamas, Cuba, Indonesia and the Philippines, which together hold about 61% of the safe zones.
That concentration creates a stark geopolitical reality. The “blueprints” for ocean survival sit mainly in the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean. New resilient spots in Belize, Nicaragua and the Turks and Caicos Islands are encouraging, but the study also highlights a massive disparity in marine resources. Small-island and developing nations can now point to these maps when demanding international funding and technical help.
