Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is here. Many consultants sell expensive audits for this. Most of it is fluff.

GEO is actually just a set of technical rules. These rules tell AI systems what your site contains. They help AI talk about you correctly.

The old SEO loop:

  • User searches.
  • Google shows a list of links.
  • User clicks a link.
  • Traffic goes to your site.

The new AI loop:

  • User asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude a question.
  • The model fetches data or uses its training.
  • The model writes an answer.
  • The user reads the answer.
  • The user might never visit your site.

AI crawlers like GPTBot and ClaudeBot are already on your site. They do not build ranked lists. They build models of your content.

Traditional SEO focuses on position. GEO focuses on comprehension.

To win at GEO, you need three things:

  1. The llms.txt file Place a plain text file at your domain root. Use it to tell AI who you are. Include your expertise, your editorial stance, and how you want to be cited. This prevents models from guessing your details.

  2. Explicit robots.txt updates Do not leave AI access to chance. Add specific directives for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot. Tell them to allow your content so they can index it accurately.

  3. Structured Data (JSON-LD) Use Person and Article schemas. This provides machine-readable facts. It tells a model your name, your location, and your expertise without them needing to guess from your prose.

Practical steps for you:

  • Create an llms.txt file today.
  • Add Person schema to your About page.
  • Add Article schema to your posts.
  • Include a "dateModified" field to show freshness.

AI systems reward clarity. They reward specificity. If you provide a clear identity and direct facts, they will cite you.

If someone charges you a fortune for a GEO strategy, they are selling you air. This is a two-hour technical job.
