A rare, yellow-flowered plant known as the caper-fruited Tropidocarpum has been rediscovered in California’s Contra Costa County after being missing from botanical records since 1957. This significant scientific find, located in the Vasco Hills Regional Preserve, underscores the critical importance of targeted conservation efforts and long-term ecological monitoring.
A Decades-Long Search Ends in Success
The rediscovery was not a matter of luck but the result of a deliberate, sustained botanical search. On March 3, 2025, botanist Heath Bartosh of Nomad Ecology and his colleague Spencer Adams located the plant while working for the East Contra Costa County Habitat Conservancy. The search was catalyzed by a sighting of individual plants on nearby private land in 2023, which led experts to believe a larger, hidden population might still exist in the surrounding ridgetops.
Documenting the species proved challenging due to the nature of annual plants, which do not necessarily germinate every year. As noted by Abigail Fateman, executive director of the conservancy, a site may appear barren in one season while still hosting dormant seeds, requiring persistent and thoughtful survey approaches to confirm a species' presence.
Ecological Decline and the Battle Against Invasive Species
The caper-fruited Tropidocarpum was first documented in 1888 by Professor Edward Lee Greene of the University of California, Berkeley. At that time, it was considered a common sight in the alkaline valley lands near the San Joaquin River. However, its decline began in the late 19th century as non-native species began to dominate California's grasslands, aggressively outcompeting native flora for space and resources.
Currently, the species is classified as 1B.1 by the California Native Plant Society, marking it as rare, threatened, or endangered. Even with this breakthrough, the species remains on the brink of extinction, with only two known populations in the entire East Bay region, each containing fewer than 20 individual plants.
Land Management and the Role of Controlled Grazing
The survival of such sensitive species often depends on sophisticated land management strategies. While this specific discovery was driven by fieldwork, the broader ecological health of the Vasco Hills Regional Preserve is supported by controlled livestock grazing.
Research published in the journal PLOS ONE suggests that grazing can actually benefit native plant communities. By removing built-up grass litter and reducing the density of invasive annual grasses, grazing creates the necessary space for native species to establish themselves.
