GitHub Copilot now uses usage-based billing. Claude Opus costs jumped from 7.5x to 27x. Your bill will spike if you run agentic models all day.
GitHub warned everyone in April. They sent preview bills in May. Many users ignored these alerts. They waited until their quota hit zero.
Single requests cost little. This is the trap. Low costs hide high volume. A six-hour agent run adds up fast. Usage-based billing shows the true cost.
Stop guessing. Start measuring.
- Assign a number to your model choice.
- Treat token spend like cloud costs.
- Review your spend monthly.
- Use defaults to make cheap models the first choice.
Do not rely on Auto routing. Vendors optimize Auto for their own needs. They balance load and capacity. Auto often avoids expensive models. You must pick frontier models manually for hard tasks.
The best teams learn from the first warning.
