People said AI would replace software engineers in six months. That claim is half true.
History repeats itself. In 2010, businesses wanted to do more with less. Specialized silos slowed down productivity. This led to the rise of the Full Stack Engineer.
To understand your future, you must understand three professional shapes:
- I-shaped: You focus on one specific topic. You know it deeply but ignore everything else.
- T-shaped: You know one topic well but have basic knowledge of many other areas. You are a generalist.
- Comb-shaped: You have deep knowledge in several different areas.
AI will target I-shaped professionals. If your only value is knowing one specific language or niche technology, a model can replace you. AI can write code and find bugs in that niche.
However, AI struggles with context. It lacks the ability to connect unrelated data points to solve a problem. Humans excel at pattern matching across different disciplines.
Generalists survive because they adapt. They notice patterns in new technologies because they understand the underlying logic of many systems.
If AI hype continues, I-shaped workers will struggle. T-shaped and Comb-shaped workers will use their lateral thinking to lead. If the AI hype fails, companies will need generalists to fix complex tech debt across entire stacks.
You have time to prepare. Use this period to broaden your skills:
- Coders: Learn a CI/CD stack.
- SysAdmins: Learn Python, Rust, or Go.
- AI enthusiasts: Learn how to build systems without relying on a constant internet connection.
Do not try to replace your skills with a subscription. Invest in your own knowledge base instead.
There are two types of technologists: those who love to learn and those who are just looking for a jackpot. Choose to be a learner.
