Tailwind made money through Tailwind UI. This is a paid library of pre-built components. People paid to save time.
Then shadcn/ui arrived. It is free. You copy and paste the code. It works on top of Tailwind. It spread fast.
People stopped buying Tailwind UI because they had a better free option. Why pay for a kit when you can copy a free one?
AI plays a role, but not in the way people think. Tools like Cursor and v0 write code faster. They do not care if they write Tailwind UI code or shadcn/ui code.
AI is a distribution tool. It speeds up what is already winning. Since shadcn/ui was free, AI made it the default choice for developers.
This is a pattern for open source businesses.
- You build a successful open source tool.
- You add a paid premium layer.
- A competitor builds a free version of that premium layer using your tool.
Tailwind made utility-first CSS a standard. But a technique is not a moat. Once everyone uses the technique, anyone can build on it.
shadcn/ui changed how people use components. You do not install an npm package. You paste the code into your own project. This removes version issues. Developers love this.
The layoffs show that the product no longer brings in enough money to pay the staff. If AI were the main threat, Tailwind would hire engineers to build AI features. Instead, they downsized.
AI sped up the decline, but it did not cause it. The decline started when the community chose the free option.
This is a lesson for open source creators. Your paid layer needs a moat. If the community can replicate your paid features for free, you do not have a business.
Tailwind the technology is a winner. Tailwind the business model failed.
