A year ago, I would have laughed at the idea of a software engineer job centered on talking to AI.
Now, job postings ask for experience with Cursor, Claude, GPT, and Windsurf.
I do not see a downside. If a company pays a software engineer salary to build things with AI, I will take it.
I enjoy programming. I started long before AI existed. I like solving problems and debugging systems. If AI tools vanished tomorrow, I would still write code.
Many developers fear vibe coding means:
- Copying random AI output
- Shipping broken software
- Replacing engineering with prompts
That happens sometimes. But it is not what great developers do.
Mathematicians did not disappear when calculators arrived. Programmers did not disappear when IDEs added autocomplete. Every generation has a new tool that older experts claim ruins the profession. Then, everyone uses it.
AI is the next step in that cycle.
Developers who know software fundamentals move faster because they offload repetitive tasks. Much of software work is:
- Writing CRUD endpoints
- Building forms
- Connecting APIs
- Fixing styling bugs
- Updating dependencies
- Writing tests
- Refactoring old code
- Reading documentation
If AI removes this friction, use it. You do not get bonus points for suffering.
The value is not in typing prompts. The value is in understanding software.
Experienced developers get better AI results because they know when the AI is wrong. They spot security flaws. They see bad architecture. They catch hallucinations.
The real skill is reviewing code, not just generating it.
Software engineering is changing. The goal is no longer to write every line by hand. The goal is to use every tool to solve problems efficiently.
Companies value productivity. If one engineer does the work of three using AI, management will notice.
You have two choices:
- Refuse AI to protect your identity as a real programmer.
- Learn the tools to become more productive.
The second choice is better for your career.
I will still review every line. I will still own the architecture. I will just reach the goal faster.
The winners will be the people in the middle. They understand software deeply enough to use AI without becoming dependent on it. They can build from scratch, but they choose tools to save time.
