Google AI Overviews answer questions fast. You do not need to click a link. This makes most directories useless.
I built three directory sites anyway.
My bet is simple. By October 2026, one site will get 200 organic clicks per month. If I fail, I will post the data and explain why.
Google AI is good at lists. It is bad at three things.
- Specific filters. I use a database. You search for tools with offline mode. Google gives you a paragraph. I give you a filtered list.
- Negative warnings. My sites tell you who should skip a tool. Google stays positive.
- Freshness. I check GitHub commits weekly. Google relies on old web mentions.
I target the second search. You find a tool on Google. Then you search for a direct comparison.
Structured data wins these searches. It beats generative prose.
My setup costs 25 dollars a month. Vercel and Turso keep it cheap. I use Claude Haiku for data.
Three outcomes prove me wrong:
- High impressions but zero clicks.
- AdSense rejections.
- People move all research to ChatGPT.
I will share the results regardless of the win.
