Noida International Airport to Launch First Cargo Flight Today

The Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar is rapidly transitioning from a passenger gateway to a massive logistics powerhouse. Following the recent commencement of commercial passenger flights, the airport is set to operationalize its first cargo flight today, marking a pivotal moment in its journey toward becoming North India's premier aviation hub.

Scaling Up: Massive Cargo Capacity and Infrastructure

The expansion into cargo operations is backed by heavy-duty infrastructure designed for rapid scaling. Developed by Air India SATS (AISATS), the cargo facilities are starting with an initial annual handling capacity of 200,000 metric tonnes. However, the long-term vision for NIA is far more ambitious, with strategic plans to expand this capacity to 1.5 million metric tonnes.

To support this volume, the airport has invested in 22,000 square metres of dedicated warehouse space and two specialized freighter bays capable of supporting round-the-clock operations. The facility is equipped with 19 truck docks, nine X-ray machines, and 12 Unit Load Device (ULD) roller decks to ensure high throughput, security, and speed for both domestic and international shipments.

A Digital-First Approach to Logistics

Recognizing the needs of modern e-commerce and freight forwarders, NIA is integrating advanced digital ecosystems to minimize delays. The cargo hub will utilize the IATA-recommended E-Freight platform, facilitating paperless movements and simplified documentation.

Operational efficiency will be driven by sophisticated systems, including COSYS+, e-Acceptance, and dedicated cargo community platforms. These technologies will enable end-to-end live tracking, providing real-time visibility for stakeholders. Furthermore, the airport’s direct connectivity via the Yamuna Expressway is expected to streamline truck movement, ensuring that goods reach their destinations with minimal transit friction.

Beyond Passenger Transit: A Strategic Hub for North India

While the airport's recent passenger milestones—including an inaugural IndiGo flight from Lucknow—have garnered significant emotional and social attention, its economic engine will be heavily fueled by logistics. The project aims to significantly de-congest Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport while serving as a critical node for the movement of goods across the northern region.
