Forty-five percent of consumers use AI assistants to find local services. This is a massive jump from just six percent last year.
Yet, ChatGPT recommends only 1.2 percent of local businesses.
The game has changed. You are no longer fighting for a spot on a page of links. You are fighting to be the one name the AI says out loud.
Most local businesses do not see this coming.
Here is the reality of the new search landscape:
- AI summaries now appear in 68 percent of local searches.
- When an AI summary appears, clicks to organic results drop by 58 percent.
- Some AI modes result in zero clicks for traditional websites.
If the AI does not mention you, you do not exist to these customers.
The biggest mistake is thinking Google is the only source. AI models often pull data from elsewhere. Research shows ChatGPT gets 60 to 70 percent of its local data from Foursquare's Places API.
To stay visible, you must fix your data hygiene:
- Clean your listings on Foursquare, Apple Maps, and Yelp.
- Ensure your name, address, and phone number are identical everywhere.
- Make your website machine-readable. Use server-rendered text instead of heavy JavaScript.
- Use structured data like LocalBusiness and FAQ schemas.
AI needs to read your hours, prices, and services easily. If it cannot parse your data, it will not recommend you.
The shift is happening fast. In travel, AI-driven traffic to booking sites grew nearly 200 percent in a single year.
You cannot measure the customers you lose because you cannot track searches where you were never mentioned. The loss is silent.
Stop optimizing for a list of links. Start optimizing to be the answer.
