Zerodha, Groww, Angel One, and Upstox Get Nod to Enable US Stock Trading

Indian retail investors are set to enjoy seamless access to US equities as four of the country's leading brokerage firms receive regulatory clearance to operate from GIFT City. This move marks a significant milestone in democratizing cross-border investing for the Indian masses through familiar domestic platforms.

Regulatory Breakthrough in GIFT City

The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) has officially granted licenses to Zerodha, Groww, Angel One, and Upstox to act as intermediaries out of Gujarat's international finance hub. This regulatory green light allows these fintech giants to facilitate US stock trading directly through their existing ecosystems.

The approvals were rolled out in phases: Groww and Upstox received their Global Access Provider (GAP) licenses on June 2, followed by Angel One on June 12. Zerodha also secured its approval during this period, strengthening its long-promised roadmap to include international markets.

Understanding the Two Licensing Models

The IFSCA has approved two distinct operational structures for these brokerages, which will dictate how trades are executed and settled:

These structures are designed to operate within the framework of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), which allows Indian residents to remit up to $250,000 annually for overseas investments.

Surging Appetite for Global Equities

The entry of these major players comes at a time when Indian interest in foreign markets is skyrocketing. Recent data highlights a massive shift in investor behavior:

GIFT City
