Anthropic announced today that it will open a new office in Bengaluru, making India its second-largest market for the Claude AI assistant. Revenue from Indian customers has doubled since October 2025, prompting the firm to shift resources from pure research to sales, support and developer outreach.

Why Bengaluru matters

The Bengaluru hub is Anthropic’s second outpost in the Asia-Pacific region, the first being in Tokyo. Irina Ghose, a former Microsoft executive, will head the Indian operation. By planting a commercial base in the country, the company signals that it sees India not just as a user base but as a partner in expanding Claude’s ecosystem.

What the office signals

Unlike a research-focused lab, the Bengaluru office is geared toward:

  • Direct sales engagement with Indian enterprises
  • Technical support for existing Claude deployments
  • Community building for developers who want to embed the model in their products

Potential upside and doubts

The Bengaluru launch marks a clear strategic pivot: Anthropic is moving from a research-centric posture to a market-driven model in India.
