Microsoft just revealed its Majorana 2 quantum chip.
This new hardware uses AI to design and build quantum systems. Microsoft says they will have commercial quantum computers ready by 2029. This is much faster than previous estimates.
The Majorana 2 chip is 1,000 times more reliable than older versions.
Here is how they did it:
• AI Design: Microsoft uses a system called Microsoft Discovery. It uses autonomous AI agents to handle research and development. • New Materials: Instead of aluminum, the chip uses lead. Lead acts as a shield against cosmic noise. This keeps the quantum state stable. • Better Stability: Most quantum bits last only microseconds. The Majorana 2 qubits last 20 seconds or more. • Faster Testing: AI agents automate measurements. Tasks that took weeks now take much less time. • Error Detection: AI agents found errors that humans missed, such as uncalibrated sensors.
Microsoft faces big challenges. Lead is hard to work with during manufacturing because it dissolves in water. Microsoft created a special process to solve this.
The race for quantum computing is heating up. Microsoft is now competing directly with IBM, Google, and Amazon. While some scientists ask for more public data, Microsoft shares its findings with agencies like DARPA.
If this works, quantum computers will solve problems that today's fastest computers cannot. This includes new drugs, better materials, and advanced climate modeling.
AI is now helping build the next generation of hardware. This creates a cycle where AI makes the tools that make AI even stronger.
