SpaceX already flies DoD payloads, tracks missiles, and runs the Starlink satellite internet constellation the military uses for resilient communications. Now it wants to add a dedicated data-center that can host massive AI workloads.
The Wall Street Journal says SpaceX will compete with "neocloud" specialists such as CoreWeave by bundling large-scale compute with the launch company’s price discipline. The Pentagon’s push mirrors a broader government effort to tap private-sector cloud power; Amazon, for example, has pledged up to $50 billion to expand AWS capacity for U.S. government customers.
Building a cloud pedigree
SpaceX’s move into data-center services is not a sudden pivot. In June the company signed a multi-year cloud-services pact with Alphabet’s Google, gaining access to roughly 110,000 Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs)—the chips that dominate AI training. Around the same time, AI start-up Anthropic began using SpaceX’s "Colossus 1" facility in Memphis, tapping 300 megawatts of power to run its own models.
Why the Pentagon cares
Modern geopolitics increasingly hinges on computational speed and scale. Training a large language model or processing real-time sensor feeds can mean the difference between actionable intelligence and a missed window. High-end GPUs and massive power draws are scarce; the U.S. treats control over them as a strategic imperative.
