For any printer that produces boxes, labels or inner packs, the deadline is not just a legal hurdle—it is a data-pipeline imperative. Without a GS1 Digital Link that resolves correctly, a product cannot enter the EU market.

Why the deadline matters to printers

The regulation treats the printed package as a digital endpoint. A QR code on a carton must do more than point to a website; it must carry a structured identifier that can be resolved to the right data for every stakeholder—warehouse scanners, consumer browsers, procurement systems and recyclers. The identifier is the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) together with batch and serial numbers, encoded in a URL-style format known as a GS1 Digital Link.

A conventional QR code can link to any URL, but a Digital Link follows a prescribed path, for example:

  • Resolver required – A resolver service interprets the request and serves the appropriate format: HTML for shoppers, JSON for procurement, material-composition data for recyclers.
  • Domain longevity – The domain used in the link must outlive the product’s life. An expired domain turns every printed code into a dead link.

Because the printed code is the only physical carrier of the identifier, any mistake in the data structure propagates downstream and can stall the whole supply chain.

Immediate steps for packaging printers

  1. Capture identifiers early – During order intake, collect the GTIN, batch number and serial number from the brand owner.
  2. Assign resolver responsibility – Decide whether the brand, a third-party service or your own infrastructure will host the resolver.
  3. Automate URI generation – Build a script or integrate a software module that assembles the Digital Link from the collected identifiers. Manual entry is error-prone and cannot scale.
  4. Print with high error correction – Use QR-code error correction level Q to survive matte lamination, varnish or other finishing processes.
  5. Validate post-process – Scan the printed code after every major finishing step to confirm readability and correct resolution.

Start with a single client and a single GTIN. Verify that the generated URI resolves to the expected data for each user type before rolling out to larger batches.
